Functional Off-Season Training Clinic for Endurance Athletes
by Janetta Waterhouse
Over 20 T2 and Sunflower Striders members turned out on Thursday, October 16 to learn about core strengthening from Rebound staff Mike Flynn and Kelly Hennes. Mike defined core for us, thighs to shoulders, and talked about what off-season really means. He believes core work is beneficial year round, twice a week, but that periodization or phases of training should be given thought for each athlete because it will affect the intensity of the strength training. Micro cycles, race cycles and yearly cycles can all include core strength training because it is such an important part of each different event.
Kelly and Mike worked through many examples of core training ideas for triathletes that fell into six different categories: body bridges, leg circuits, push-up circuits, basic core series with a medicine ball, chop series with a medicine ball, and physio-ball series. These were all very simple exercises that don’t need a lot of time or special equipment.
The concepts stressed most through the evening were the importance of the core as the athlete’s center of power and ensuring perfect form during the core exercises. Good form during primary activity – swimming, running and cycling – equates to less energy expenditure and is dependent on a strong core. Strength training will be more successful and much less injury prone if the exercises are performed with the best form possible.
Other important messages Mike had for us: adopt these strength training additions in phases, and as each new exercise is added, "don’t go at it like you’re killing snakes.” Start slow with a new exercise and gradually increase intensity.
Thank you to Rebound for hosting this event and providing snacks!
